The waiting.
Last week I heard the phrase, “The biggest thief in our lives isn’t time. It’s waiting.”
I reflected on this phrase because it speaks to the widespread tendency to wait endlessly for tomorrow, as if it were a given, or to wait illusorily for the perfect, ideal, or appropriate moment. And to stop stealing our own lives, we need to activate our consciousness and realize that the perfect moment is exactly this one, now.
I agree with the phrase because waiting often prevents us from fully enjoying our lives. But on the other hand, sometimes all we need is to wait! And who makes these decisions? We do!
So, in truth, the biggest thief in our lives is ourselves, especially when we choose to wait for later, instead of living each passing moment with body and soul, because the present is a gift, an opportunity, and a possibility.
It’s not easy to get out of the waiting state, but the practice of awareness helps to detach ourselves from comfort, from what’s fashionable, or from what seems easier, and makes us try, even when it’s not perfect. The practice of mindfulness doesn’t grow the muscles that are visible, but it strengthens those that are unseen and far more powerful.
