INTENSIVE ASHTANGA YOGA, PRANAYAMA & PHILOSOPHY WORKSHOP WITH HAMISH HENDRY, NOVEMBER 22 & 23, AT ASHTANGA CASCAIS, PORTUGAL
Hamish Hendry is one of the few teachers certified by the former Shri K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute. He has been practicing Ashtanga Yoga since 1986 and is the founder of Ashtanga Yoga London. His classes are a benchmark for learning this practice.
PROGRAM
November 22, Saturday
8:00 AM – Mysore Style, the traditional style of teaching and practicing Ashtanga Yoga. This is a group class where the teacher guides beginners and teaches, corrects, and adjusts the more experienced students. It is a special class because it allows us to connect with our breath and the knowledge and strengthening of our body and mind, to elevate our attention, energy, and awareness.
10:30 AM – Break
11:00 AM – Ashtanga Yoga & Pranayama. Within Ashtanga Yoga, an 8-step practice path, Pranayama is the 4th stage and is practiced after mastering Asana, the postures. Pranayama is the expansion and control of vital energy through breathing. Pranayama cleanses and purifies our energy, strengthens our nervous system, and prepares the body and mind for the more subtle stages of Yoga.
Breathing is an essential pillar of our health, and on the path of Yoga, it plays a fundamental role in enabling us to embark on the journey of self-knowledge, self-improvement, and change. Therefore, it is important to learn more about the art of controlling and expanding the breath.
Hamish will present Pranayama according to the tradition of Patanjali but also according to what he learned from Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the founder of our Ashtanga Yoga.
1:00 PM – End.
November 23, Sunday
8:00 AM – Mysore Style. Ashtanga Yoga is a practice that teaches responsibility, discipline, consistency, rigor, determination, and courage. But it is a practice to be done with respect, without judgment, perfectionism, comparison, or competition. It is a practice that begins physically to find our inner self, and should be practiced with sensitivity, tenderness, compassion, and love. Hamish will be with each practitioner, working on details that expand to the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels.
10:30 AM – Break.
11:00 AM – Ashtanga Yoga & Philosophy.
Sri K. Pattabhi Jois stated that Ashtanga Yoga was 99% practice and 1% theory. But this 1% of theory helps us understand and deepen what we do on the mat, so we can later apply it to our daily lives.
There are many classic texts that remain relevant today, because the practice must respect its foundations, its ancestry, and its history; only then can it continue to be Yoga. But there is one work that is a fundamental foundation for all Ashtanga Yoga practitioners. It is called the Yoga Sutras, and is believed to have been written by the sage Patanjali, who called Yoga an 8-step path = Ashtanga Yoga.
Hamish will share essential information about some of the 196 aphorisms that comprise the Yoga Sutras, so we can gain new perspectives and insights.
1:00 PM – End
